Human-Wildlife Conflict ManagementBarrett Global Explorer's Grant
I was awarded a $10,000 grant for my independently designed project researching human-wildlife conflict management outside of major National Parks in 6 countries. My journey started in Thailand then Australia, Nepal, South Africa, Colombia, and finished in USA during summer 2018. |
Major FindingsSuccessfully defended in 2019.
After returning from the trip around the world I successfully defended my thesis in the spring. We found countries with lower Human Development Index (HDI) typically stated less conflict with wildlife occurred than higher HDI countries despite the lower HDI countries having higher & more dangerous conflicts known to occur. Additionally, higher HDI countries were often less happy with National Park (NP) management. The community members of all countries had incredibly creative and applied suggestions for better management. We ultimately found that greater communication between community members on the borders of NPs and NP officials are needed. For more details on my thesis, please follow the link below. |
MORE TO COMEPublishing in 2023
Having graduated with my master's degree (2020) and started working full time, I am looking forward to returning to this project and publishing it in 2023. In the meantime, below is a video reflecting on my experience.
