Wildlife along the US-Mexico borderWhat environmental variables influence mammal habitat use?
We deployed a 25-camera study design from Oct 2018 to April 2019 to better understand the environmental variables (corridor width, % surface water, NDVI, etc) influencing medium- and large-sized mammal habitat use in Cuenca Los Ojos, Sonora, Mexico. Federal Highway 2, the border wall, and climate change are all huge stressors for wildlife in the region making it imperative to better understand how species are moving through corridors in an ecological important region. |
Wildlife Cameras21 species of mammals recorded
We recorded 21 different species of mammals including 13 medium- and large-bodied mammals like American black bear (Ursus americanus), jaguar (Panthera onca), mountain lion (Puma concolor), bobcat (Lynx rufus), white-nosed coati (Nasua narica), four species of skunk, and many more. Relationships between mammals and the measured environmental variables varied by species. Both occupancy and RN abundance modeling were performed along with PCA and ANOVAs. More specifics about my results can be found in my MS thesis following the link below & in future publications. |
